When Okinawa Held
An Entire World
Okinawa, Japan — In Okinawa, Isk gifted his photographer wife, Murni, the rare experience of being seen instead of the one seeing. I was flown in to surprise her with a family photo session. This was where the camera was taken gently out of her hands and placed into mine. We lived for a few days in a cabin small enough for me to experience their world. In a village quiet enough that Isa’s (their son) laughter and cries echoed further than it should. Between the summer waterfalls and borrowed beaches, I watched a family in all its unglamorous yet sacred form. Negotiating between requests and small surrenders. A child orbiting his parents like the only fixed points in a world he has yet to trust. These are the moments I want them to keep for as long as they can for I know they seek to always slip away too easily.
